Devastating heavy rains have brought Tripura to a standstill, displacing thousands and causing severe flooding across the state. On Tuesday, landslides added to the chaos, claiming four lives. A tragic incident in Debipur ADC village, South Tripura saw three members of the Chakma family—Trisankar, his wife Ranjani, and their minor daughter Manita—killed after a landslide swept away their home. Another fatality occurred in Champlai, Khowai district, where 14-year-old Biresh Debbarma was buried alive in his home due to a landslide.
Preliminary assessments report severe damage to 15 houses and partial damage to 18 others. Areas such as Jolaibari and Santirbazar have been particularly hard-hit, with extensive flooding reported in low-lying regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rainfall for the next three days, driven by a low-pressure system in Bangladesh.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has called for immediate action from district administrations to mitigate flood impacts. Relief centers have been established, and district administrations instructed to prioritize public safety.
Rescue operations are in full swing, with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) working tirelessly to evacuate residents. Rivers across Tripura are nearing critical levels, complicating relief efforts. In West Tripura alone, 24 relief camps have been set up, housing 4,864 displaced residents. A total of 57 rescue teams, including SDRF, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Civil Defence, and Apada Mitra volunteers, are actively involved in the rescue missions. Additionally, the Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, and Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited are working collaboratively to restore essential services and clear road blockages caused by fallen trees.
The situation remains critical, and authorities are urging residents to stay safe and heed warnings as rescue and relief efforts continue.
