In a significant demonstration in New Delhi today, various organizations from the Karbi Anglong district, including the Karbi Students’ Union and other groups such as KADHASDCOM, Dimasa Students’ Association, Karbi Adorbar, Tiva Adorbar, Karcha, and Kuiya, gathered at Jantar Mantar to advocate for the establishment of a self-governing state encompassing Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao districts. The protest aimed to capture the attention of the central government during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
Among the prominent figures present at the protest was MP Amar Singh Tisso, who highlighted the urgent need for a self-governing body for the three hill districts. His presence lent significant weight to the demonstration, as he articulated the aspirations of the local populace for greater autonomy and governance. Tisso expressed optimism regarding the potential implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution, which grants special provisions for the formation of autonomous councils in certain areas.
The MP emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is actively pursuing this initiative and acknowledged the supportive role of the state government in facilitating these efforts. “We are hopeful that our demands will be met, and our voices will resonate with the central government,” he stated, reflecting the determination of the protesters.
The demonstration also witnessed participation from leaders of the Karbi Students’ Union studying in Delhi, as well as representatives from the Chakma Students’ Union of Mizoram. Their involvement underscored a broader regional solidarity among ethnic groups in Northeast India seeking greater representation and autonomy. Several leaders took to the stage to deliver powerful speeches, articulating their collective vision for the future and the rights of their communities.
